Be honest

 

  • Remember anything you tell them could be checked so be honest with all answers. Nowadays, a lot of information is available through reference checking, internet etc so always answer accurately.
  • They may ask why you left your previous employment. Be factual, brief and non-critical. If there were legal or dismissal issues you need to be straight forward about them.
  • Don't offer anyone as a verbal referee if they will not give you a good report, or if you haven't checked they are willing to provide one.
  • It is common to be asked if you have already arranged something that may require time away from work after this position starts. If so, it would be good to mention it at this time.
